Systems Engineer

Chesapeake Systems provides a wide range of media-focused IT services and solutions to niche markets, focusing on supporting systems to manage media content for education, sports, production, music, studios, and major broadcast environments. We’re looking for a talented and driven Systems Engineer to join us in support of our industry-leading client base.

CHESA provides benefits including health, dental, and disability insurance, Simple IRA with Employer Matching, and earned leave/PTO. We are a proud equal opportunity employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, national origin, age, sex, religion, disability, sexual orientation, marital status, military or veteran status, gender identity or expression, or any other basis protected by local, state or federal law.

Qualifications & Skills

CHESA’s engineers provide a regular face of the company. We travel to clients and provide them with post-sales advice, support, deployment, integration, and development services. Additionally, we communicate technical ideas, solutions, and problem explanations in plain English, and prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment while maintaining a level of autonomy. Our team has an excellent track record of client relationship management, which puts us well ahead of the competition.

Our ideal candidate will work well in the close-knit and well tenured team in CHESA’s Baltimore, MD office, as well as acting as a friendly and professional face to our wide range of clients. You’ll be part of a team that supports clients together and collaboratively to swiftly respond to and resolve their problems, participate in the on-call rotation (up to five non-consecutive weeks a year), assist with proactive maintenance procedures, and occasionally travel far and wide to visit our clients across the country.

You’ll need reliable personal transportation and the ability to lift and carry 50+ lbs. We like college degrees, and have a wide range of backgrounds from music to computing within our team, but we recognize that similar, demonstrable, 3-5 year experience is just as – if not more – important. Experience in video environments is also highly beneficial. Flexibility is a must: CHESA’s regular hours are 9am-6pm EST, but very occasionally you could be asked to travel or work outside regular business hours, on the weekend, and/or in the evening to accommodate travel and client production schedules.

The team works together to advise on client support policies and project requirements. CHESA’s clients work with us for years on small and large projects and in an ongoing support relationship, and as such anyone joining us will be expected to rapidly learn the wide range of solutions the organization is known for providing, and integrate well into the established culture of the team.

You’ll maintain direct relationships with management and the executive team through coaching and planning to align your goals with our own, and to further your knowledge and role. You’ll demonstrate great problem-solving skills, not just for support efforts but for documentation and development too. You will exercise your knowledge in infrastructure, enterprise hardware and software, and integration to support media-centric storage, network, and asset management systems and workflows for industry leaders.

We maintain a mixed skillset. You’ll need experience in RHEL-based Linux, macOS, Windows; AD/OD/LDAP, DNS, DHCP, VPN, Fibre Channel and Ethernet over Fibre, traditional copper ethernet networking; production storage including StorNext and Xsan; RAID, NAS and nearline storage concepts; Tape and disk based archive systems and concepts; scripting including Python and Bash; database management including PostgreSQL and MySQL. It’d be nice if you knew your way around Java, Groovy, web APIs including REST and SOAP; Nagios, rrdtool, and SNMP. Knowledge of Enterprise Service Bus technologies is beneficial.
